The Waiting Game

I first started hearing about Human Design a couple of years ago. At the time, it seemed overwhelming to me, and I never imagined I would study it in depth the way I have been studying astrology.

However, when an astrologer I very much admired began sharing the practical ways in which Human Design was improving her life, I decided to give it a second look, and now I am in the deep end of the Human Design pool.

While Human Design uses the location of the planets at our time of birth just like astrology does (and, interestingly, also the location of the planets 88 days before we were born), Human Design is its own unique system. Human Design integrates wisdom from astrology, the I Ching, the Chakras, and the Kabbalah for the purpose of showing us how our specific energetic operating system works (as reflected in our Human Design chart, which is called a bodygraph), and how we can thrive in our work, our relationships, and life in general.

Most importantly for me, Human Design teaches us that it is an experiment that we are meant to play with--basically, take what works for you and leave the rest. This approach resonates deeply with me because I used to tell my astrology students that everything in astrology is theory until you test it. And guess what? There is a part of my bodygraph that actually highlights the importance of experimentation and trial and error in my life.

Here are the top 10 things I have learned about myself in my Human Design experiment so far:

  1.  I am not meant to make decisions based on my Head Center--so no lists of pros and cons! (This is true for all five Human Design Types.)

  2. I am meant to wait to respond to things in my external environment that light me up (specifically, things that light up my Sacral Center, which represents life force and work force energy). I like to think of it as being in a dance with the Universe. (This comes from my being a Generator, which is one of the five Human Design Types.)

  3. I can tell if I am using my Strategy (i.e., wait to respond) if I feel satisfied at the end of the day. (This comes from my being a Generator.)

  4. When I am feeling frustrated, this is a wake-up call to figure out whether I am on a plateau waiting to break through to the next stage of mastery or whether I am meant to be moving on from a particular experience. (This comes from my being a Generator.)

  5. I am not meant to make spontaneous decisions; instead, I am meant to wait out my emotional wave and see how I feel about a decision once my feelings are neutral/clear. (This comes from my having Emotional Authority, which is one of several types of Authorities in Human Design).

  6. I have nothing to prove and only have energy to enter into commitments in accordance with my Human Design Strategy (i.e., wait to respond) rather than through sheer willpower. (This one has been very eye-opening, and it comes from my having an undefined, or white, Will Center, which represents value, the material plane, resource allocation, and willpower.)

  7. My experience of my intuition is variable and not always the same. (This one answered a question I had long had about my intuition, and it comes from my having an undefined, or white, Spleen Center, which represents intuition, time, health, and our survival fears.)

  8. I am designed to build expertise in a subject I love, to learn through trial and error, and to share what I know with others in a way that is well-received. (This comes from my having a 1/3 Profile.  There are 12 Profiles in Human Design.)

  9. I will naturally attract others who have the skills I lack, so I don't have to try to do it all on my own. (This comes from my having Split Definition, which means that not all of my defined, or colored, Centers are talking to each other, so it helps to have people step in to fill particular gaps.)

  10. I intuitively know which big dreams to follow, but I have to grapple with the fear of failure. I am here to express and transmit this. (This comes from having my Conscious Sun in Gate 32 Continuity.)
